Plot location: 0.35 miles NE of jct. Rtes. 626 and 705, near Pea Hill Creek.
Plot located on a xeric, sloping (8 deg) portion of a large granitic "flatrock". Sparse herbs are rooted in thin mats of Grimmia cf. laevigata and lichens; one mat of slightly deeper organic material supports a low scrub thicket of Juniperus virginiana , Ulmus alata, and Smilax spp. Characteristic herbs include Diamorpha smallii (vernal aspect, consisting of dried remains on date of sampling), Commelina erecta, Croton wildenowii, Dichanthelium laxiflorum (deeper OM mat), Opuntia humifusa, and Talinum teretifolium.
Notable mosses and lichens found in the plot are: Cladina mitis, Cladonia uncialis (abundant), crustose lichens, Dicranum sp., Grimmia sp., and Xanthoparmelia conspersa (abundant).
